Beauty Biographies - Robert Reddacliff
The Reddacliff family, comprising Mum, Dad, Rex, Robert, Victor and Shirley arrived in Tawonga in the April of 1954. We were first living in a small caravan by the river at the bottom of Tawonga (Ryders) Lane. We then moved up behind Jack Ryder’s farm until we found a house at Tawonga.
Father worked for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, in the Mechanical workshop at Mt Beauty as a mechanic. We had come down from Rockhampton, a town I was very glad to move from. Both my older brother Rex and I had played Aussie Rules in Brisbane prior to Rocky, so were very glad to move to a place where “the game” was played. We all three brothers played for the Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School (H.E.S.) and for Bogong Football Club, 1sts and 2nds; Rex being among Bogong’s 20 for the 1955 premiership year.
Rex joined the Royal Australian Air Force as an apprentice in January, 1956. Myself, with Greg Seymour, joined the Royal Australian Navy as apprentices in July, 1957. After 4 years at H.M.A.S. Nirimba, at Schofield in Sydney, it was then off to sea “in real ships”. I last saw Greg in approximately 1962, and our intake of fellow navy men have been trying to locate him over many years. Our original 50 “MOBIS” have dwindled to about 10, and he is the only one uncontactable. (If anyone knows of his whereabouts please get in contact through this site)
Vic ended his navy career 9 years as an electrician, married in 1963 and had 2 children. Sadly he passed away in 1998 after two strokes a year apart.
Rex Married 1964, has 3 children, of which two boys joined the air force and a daughter who is a nurse. He did 24 years in the RAAF, receiving a BEM and now lives in Adelaide.
I was married in 1964, having two boys. The youngest lives in Melbourne and is the Curator at Xavier Primary College. My eldest is a marine pilot (navigator) with Australian Reef Pilots living in Brisbane. After completing 20 years in the RAN I moved my family to Cairns in 1975. Mum lives in Griffith NSW, sister Shirley and Toni, who was an addition to family in 1955, lives there also.
I like to visit Mt Beauty, as i still like to call it “home”, whenever I go south to visit family. I did happen to get to the School re-union in 1998. It was wonderful to reunite with friends after all those years away. I could go on, but I think I have run out of puff. Thank you for this opportunity to tell a little of our story and love to to you all.
