SkiingIntroduction
Very few high schools in Victoria have the opportunity to have skiing on their sporting agenda. Other schools that have snow covered mountains nearby have progressively joined Mt Beauty and Corryong in the schools' challenge over the years, since the early 1960's. Mt Beauty Secondary College has produced eight Winter Olympians since 1988. Six in Cross Country Skiing and two in Freestyle (moguls). Undoubtedly, there would not be another school in Australia that could hang their hat on such an achievement. Visit the website following for a list of the Cross Country Skiers. http://birkebeiner.org.au/about/olympians/ The freestyle skiers are Adrian and Paul Coster but Phillip Bellingham, the cross country skier from the Sochi Olympics in Russia, has not yet been included on the College website. http://www.mbsc.vic.edu.au/student%20success/studentsport.html |
Not many students would have seen this badge, let alone still have one.

Proudly, the College has produced two coaches involved at Olympic Winter Games over recent years. Paul L'Huillier, former school teacher as coach at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics and Finn Marsland who was a student at the school and has been to three Winter Olympics as coach in 2006, 2010 and 2014. Finn has worked for Skiing and Snowboard Australia for the last 13 years as National Cross Country Skiing Coach and Program Director.
Older History
This history page has a lot of cuttings and information supplied by one of the original Mt Beauty High School skiing team members, Diane Edmondson.
The article below was drawn from the SKI Australia magazine and written by a prominent North Eastern Victorian Member of Parliament from the Upper Murray area near Towong, the Honourable Tom Mitchell. Tom loved his skiing and saw the Corryong and Mt Beauty skiing challenge as a great initiative. He was later to have the trophy named after him for his support and enthusiasm.
